How to Spin Hand Dyed Fiber

Before spinning a dyed braid, decide whether you want to preserve long color runs, create repeating transitions, mix colors deliberately or let them blend unpredictably. Your splitting and plying choices matter as much as the dye pattern itself.

The short version

Before spinning a dyed braid, decide whether you want to preserve long color runs, create repeating transitions, mix colors deliberately or let them blend unpredictably. Your splitting and plying choices matter as much as the dye pattern itself.

For long repeats, keep the braid intact or split it into only a few large sections. For more frequent repeats, divide the braid lengthwise into narrower strips. For a fractal effect, prepare singles with different repeat lengths and ply them together.
